To create **an AI visualization** from SketchUp, you don't need V-Ray, a powerful workstation, or a night spent rendering. All it takes is a viewport view: you send it to Raya, and a ready 2K image appears after **20-40 seconds** and costs 2 credits. Both paths lead to the same engine, so the choice is just a matter of convenience. Let's start from the beginning though, i.e. what actually happens to your view after you send it.

## AI visualizations from SketchUp: how it works in the browser

Classic rendering requires setting up lights, HDRI maps, and PBR materials. In Raya, that step simply doesn't exist. You upload the image from the viewport in the **"Generate"**tab, choose the scene type (Interior or Architecture), and click. The calculations run on our servers, so your computer doesn't slow down for even a second, and you can keep modeling in the meantime. The system will notify you when the result is ready. Controlling everything comes down to a few fields you'll master in a minute:

- **Lighting** \- in basic mode, ready-made presets: Sunny, Cloudy, Golden Hour, Dawn, Night, and No Windows. In advanced mode, you describe the light in your own words.
- **Materials** \- a short description like "oak floor, marble countertops, linen curtains." In advanced mode, you upload your own texture and specify where it should go: kitchen fronts, floor, or wall.
- **Enhancements** \- toggles for "Add Decorations," "Turn on lights," "Add Person," or "Add Pet."
- **Season** \- spring, summer, autumn, and winter, available in Architecture mode. For a facade, this is the fastest way to get four different moods from a single model.
- **Quality** \- 2K for 2 credits or 4K for 4 credits, ready for presentations and printing. A 4K render takes about 1-2 minutes.

It's also worth remembering the **"Match Style"**feature, available only in the "Generate" tab. The uploaded image then acts as a reference, and subsequent views of the same apartment keep its lighting, materials, and atmosphere. Without it, each generation randomizes things a bit from scratch, with a different light temperature, material shades, or different decorations in the background. For a series of views for a client, consistency is a basic requirement for the presentation to look professional.

So why not just upload the view to a free chatbot? You can try, but after two or three generations you'll notice that ChatGPT returns an image with a shorter side of around 900 px and along the way "fixes" your design, moving walls and changing room proportions. Gemini limits the output to 2K, and often to 1K for no clear reason, and makes you choose the right model mode beforehand. Raya sticks to the uploaded geometry, because that's the one task we built it for.

### How to prepare a view in SketchUp so the render turns out well

The quality of what you send accounts for roughly 80% of the quality of the result. Imagine that instead of sending it to an algorithm, you're sending the same view to a fellow visualizer colleague: the less information you give them, the more they'll fill in on their own. A white mockup without shadows or materials is an invitation for AI to guess, and it will guess in its own way.

In SketchUp, this comes down to a few habits. Choose a clean view style, without unnecessary edges or sketchy outlines. Turn on shadows, as they give the algorithm information about the direction of light and the shape. Take care of contrast and legible geometry, and remove interface overlays and watermarks from the frame. **Note!** Even rough material colors in the model are more valuable to Raya than a perfectly smooth gray.

## Free AI plugin for SketchUp: rendering right inside the program window

The biggest difference is in the number of steps. Without the plugin, you export a PNG, switch to your browser, and upload the file. With the plugin, you frame the view directly in the panel and send it for generation with a single click, and the finished visualization doesn't have to travel between your downloads folder and the model. ## Fixing visualizations without going back to the model

The first generation is rarely the last, and that's actually normal. AI models are probabilistic, so the same operation repeated ten times will give ten slightly different results, and roughly one generation in ten will misunderstand the guidelines. That's why we've built out the [**tools for editing finished visualizations**](https://www.raya.design/en/edit)so extensively, instead of promising you infallibility.

Editing works with short, unambiguous text instructions: "change the top wall to navy blue," "remove the floor lamp," "change the time of day to golden hour." When a change should only affect part of the image, you use the **"Select area"** feature and the rest of the frame stays untouched. When a client sends a specific piece of furniture from a catalog, you upload its photo using the **"Reference objects"** feature and tell it to swap it in. You show the AI what you want instead of describing it.

There are also camera presets (Low angle, High angle, From the left, From the right, Detail, Wide angle), which create a new shot from a finished visualization, and Grid 2x2, meaning four different frames in one generation for 2 credits. One sober note: every further processing of the same image degrades its quality a little, kind of like repeatedly photocopying a photocopy. It's better to collect the client's feedback and make one edit with three changes than three separate ones.

## Video and 3D models from the same panel

Rendering is just the beginning of what you can do with an open model. From a finished visualization, you can create, for example, a short [**flythrough or close-up video**](https://www.raya.design/en/video): the image becomes the first frame, and the AI adds the motion. You can choose a length of 4, 6, or 8 seconds, plus a horizontal frame for presentations or a vertical one for Reels. Prices start at 4 credits, and you usually wait one to five minutes for the result.

The second thing is models. The "Generate 3D" tab builds a mesh from 1-4 photos of an object and costs from 6 credits, and the plugin can pull the finished model straight into SketchUp via the GLB format, without manual exporting and importing. If a client sent you a photo of an armchair that isn't in any library, you'll have it in your project within minutes.

Add it all up: rendering, corrections, animation, and modeling in one panel, on one account, and in one credit currency. You don't need to maintain three separate subscriptions or shuffle files between tools.

## How much it costs and what stays yours

I'm not trying to talk you into ditching V-Ray. A license costing around $600 a year pays for itself anywhere you need full control over the final result, and there's no point pretending AI works for every case. But for 90% of people, it may turn out to be a faster, cheaper, and sufficient tool.  

Credits are the shared currency across the whole platform and work the same way in every tool. If a generation fails due to a technical error, the credits are returned to your account automatically, usually within a few seconds.
